Dear friend of Gloriana
IN MEMORIAM: music of tribute and reflection.
Handel's The ways of Zion do mourn, written in 1737 for the memorial service of Queen Caroline, consort of George II, is a rarely heard gem, distinguished by its perfection of form and sincere depth of emotion. Herbert Howells' Take him earth for cherishing, written shortly after the assassination of John F Kennedy, is one of the most moving acappella works of the twentieth century. Also Sheppard's Media vita and American composer Eric Whitacre's When David Heard, an astonishing work that moves from textures of murmuring softness to climaxes of elemental power.
