A long time ago, many people believed that certain cultures were superior to others. Some cultures progressed - made machines - built iron ships that sailed around the world... whilst other cultures were still relatively speaking still in the stone age.
Things have progressed... I guessed... and a lot of influential people are arguing that all cultures are equal... having said that... I'm not sure whether the same people would like to live in a stone age culture in the 21st century.
Then you hear about these sorts of stories.
Teenage Girls Burnt alive for choosing their own husbands
Some people would still argue that you have to understand it in the cultural context. Yeah, if I could - I'd send these same idiots to a indigenous cannibal tribes feast festival.
Then again... maybe colonialism wasn't so bad after all. One of the Governors of India, General Sir Charles Napier made this great multicultural statement: “You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom. When men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre. Beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours.”
