One cleric said science had proved Mecca to be the centre of the Earth

Muslim scientists and clerics have called for the adoption of Mecca time to replace GMT, arguing that the Saudi city is the true centre of the Earth.

Mecca is the direction all Muslims face when they perform their daily prayers.

The call was issued at a conference held in the Gulf state of Qatar under the title: Mecca, the Centre of the Earth, Theory and Practice.

One geologist argued that unlike other longitudes, Mecca's was in perfect alignment to magnetic north.

He said the English had imposed GMT on the rest of the world by force when Britain was a big colonial power, and it was about time that changed.

.....^.^.....

What rubbish. Every true believer knows that the centre of the world is Israel. lol. Silly Arabs- despite all their wealth and power  and numerical superiority they can't defeat the Jews. Best way to get the oil price down is to foment a war between the two parties which will force the Arabs to pump more oil to fuel the war.

Just when you thought that a bunch of Kalashnikov-wielding misogynists couldn't get any kookier......
How can Mecca be perfectly aligned to magnetic north when magnetic north is constantly changing? And when did the position of magnetic north ever have any bearing on time-keeping?

I'm disappointed, but not surprised, that the BBC failed to place the terms "Muslim scientists" and "geologist" in inverted commas.

You're not being culturally sensitive dude! Remember its the fault of Bush. hahahahaha.... now go smoke some weed and knock off with all that logical Enlightenment thinking. :)

If the centre of the world is Mecca, and international time will be based on Mecca time rather than Greenwich, then as Western society we should share our knowledge and experience to help them build a chrono-laboratory/observatory. I'd be the first to be culturally sensitive and suggest an experienced team of American 'scientists' be sent there to help build a couple of atomic 'clocks'.
