Saudi top mullah says 10 year old girls should be allowed to marry

Sicko. The sooner we depend upon alternate energy as our main source of fuel the better.

Saudi Arabia's most senior cleric was quoted on Wednesday as saying it is permissible for 10-year-old girls to marry and those who think they're too young are doing the girls an injustice.

Sheik Abdul-Aziz Al Sheikh, the country's grand mufti, said during a lecture on Monday that those who say women should not marry before the age of 25 are following a "bad path," according to the pan-Arab Al-Hayat newspaper

Responding to a question about parents who force their underage daughters to marry, the mufti said: "We hear a lot about the marriage of underage girls in the media, and we should know that Islamic law has not brought injustice to women."

"For it to be said that it's not permitted to marry off girls who are 15 and younger is wrong," Al Sheikh was quoted as saying. "A female who is 10 or 12 is marriageable and those who think she's too young are wrong and are being unfair to her."

The mufti said a good upbringing will make a girl capable of carrying out her duties as a wife.

"Our mothers and before them our grandmothers married when they were barely 12," said Al Sheikh, according to Al-Hayat.

Yeah and perhaps all cultures thought it was ok 500 or 1000 years ago - so too the idea of wife burning, public executions for adultery, dueling, female child killings, etc..

har? it's a crime in all other civilizations for girls below 16 to engage in sexual activities.

Whoa ... an interesting article that highlights this type of "point of view". Agree that "alternate energy" now will do more than save planet earth.

Won't it be cool if we could build in somekind of solar energy grid that can harness the power and heat of the sun's ray in our roads and buildings?

most bus-stops in singapore are aldy running on solar power, and there is a resort in South Island NZ that relies on solar panels on the roofs of the buildings for some of its rooms.

Hopefully we'll see mass produced cheap solar panels in our life times. Its possible - when I started using computers, 4mb of RAM cost $200. Now 1GIG of higher quality RAM cost less than half.

With a Mufti like that, any wonder why that part of the world is the way it is today? I want to know what he says about 10 years old boys... No, actually, I don't. I don't want to know anything he says. It will only disgust me. Sorry.

Its an extreme patriarchal male centric society. Females don't count except as the property for husbands, fathers, brothers etc.. and are treated accordingly. If they are caught in the company of another man, no matter how innocent, the woman will be killed or tortured. Frankly, we should do all we can to undermine such a society. In that respect, the work done by missionaries through schools, hospitals is a step in the right direction. The Europeans could have effected some positive change when they were in power.

so deeply rooted is this mentality and beliefs that the Europeans could have only scratched the surface of it. And we're talking about people who have lived by these laws for more than a thousand years.

Mentality and beliefs are only a generation deep. Teach the children how to think differently and society is changed in the future.

Unfortunately the outside world has little access to the children! Maybe through the media, particularly Internet, the younger generations have an opportunity to see the outside world, and a few curious ones, might start thinking... .

One way is through Western Secular Schools setup in the country. One reason why the Wabbi school of faith is so strong in Muslim lands - is because the Rich Saudis fund the Religious schools lavishly and indoctrinate the young in their extreme religion. You have to get the people thinking logically - but that in itself is no guarantee - a lot of the 911 terrorists were trained in Western Universities. Anyways, its a start.
